BOOKBINDING FOR BEGINNERS

Tutor: Mariuca Bolaños

Length of course: 5 sessions of 3 hours each.

Price: £ 300

Is this the right course for me?

The course provides an introduction for those new to artisanal bookbinding who want to start in this profession or just enjoy creating their notebooks in an artisanal way.

For this course no previous experience or knowledge is necessary.

What will I learn?

The course is designed to enable you to:

Prepare a blank notebook from the folding and sewing of the paper to the final cover.

- Cutting and sewing the pages.

- Gluing the spine with all its parts.

- Cutting and preparing the cardboard for the covers.

- Painting with "Paste."

- Preparing the covers with two different techniques.

How will I learn?

You will learn through presentations, but mostly through demonstration and practice sessions.  The tutor will use handouts prepared especially for the course, and you will do a couple of notebooks as a practice to be finished by the end of the course.

Will I gain a qualification?

You will not gain a formal qualification, but you may receive a Certificate of Attendance and Achievement from your tutor.

What can I do next?

You may wish to progress in bookbinding as a hobby or thinking of making artisanal bookbinding a way to make a living. If this is the case, there are a lot of possibilities.  You could proceed  to short courses to learn about some specific techniques such as sewing types, artisanal headbands, folders... or to more specialized courses such as restoration, leather, gold, embossed...

What do I need to bring to the classes?

You will need to bring a notebook and a folder to keep handouts and notes together.

Can I talk to someone about my course before I start?

You can directly contact the tutor of the course via e-mail:  mbolannos@hotmail.com.
